Trump 2.0: How do we understand the moment?

Problem- How do we understand what’s going on?

In the last few weeks we have experienced major changes to US government policies that mirror right-wing authoritarian governments in many parts of the world, such as tightening the control of media and information, limiting civil liberties, suppressing dissent, and weakening the rule of law. Under the guise of “Make America Great Again”, our communities, along with many other immigrants and marginalized groups, continue to be used as scapegoats to talk about the economy while gutting protections and services for everyday people in the United States, at the same time contributing to geopolitical and socioeconomic crises around the world.

The Trump Administration is more ready and forceful this term to implement their agenda and has openly embraced a “flood the zone” strategy and taken advantage of confusion, chaos, and complacency.  However, their underlying ideals— imperialism, white nationalism, patriarchy—are not new.

Solution- Why do we have to come together?

We know that their strategy is to overwhelm people and overwhelm the system.  We also know that there is a lot of information being pushed forth by algorithms in our social media feeds, some of which contribute to misinformation and reinforce confirmation bias. It is important for us to come together, build a shared analysis of what is happening and why it’s happening, and build with each other and other communities on how to fight back.

Some of us have taken on authoritarian governments in our home countries and feel called to action at this moment. As Chinese diasporic communities, we live transnational lives, and see the relationship between what is happening in the United States and our lived experiences at home.  While we support and care for our communities, we must also organize and take action wherever our feet land. The antidote to political despair is collective resistance. Through strong relationships, campaigns, and collective organizing, we can (re)gain our courage and build people-power to make concrete changes.

Action- Join us!  AND here’s something concrete you can do

CSA Network is a community of Chinese-diaspora activists and organizers who are committed to social justice.  At this moment, we are more committed than ever to continuing to be a constant invitation for people to join the movements and together to build for power and change.

We know that we cannot fight all the battles all at once. It is important for us to be strategic in what we do and how we do it.  We invite you to join us in identifying what our roles and lanes are in building this movement together.

Here are a few things you can do today:

  1. Stay connected to us!  You can join a webinar, or get resources on how to start a study group or build your skills to take action. Sign up for the newsletter here.

  2. Find and build your community of people you trust where you can.  AND be open to conversations with people who are also trying to understand what is happening right now.  You may agree on some things, and you may disagree on others.  You may also gain some new insights.

  3. Social media best practices!  a) Self regulate how much and the type of social media you consume, b) don’t feed into misinformation-- verify information before re-posting.

We believe that where and how we spend our time is our strategic intervention. We look forward to meeting you and building with you through solidarity and action.
