CSA 2022 Recap and Upcoming in 2023

2022 Recap

2022 is right at its end. For many Chinese students and activists, this year has been an accelerated politicization. The events we have witnessed and participated in have had a profound impact on our understanding of and actions for social justice.

This year, CSA continued to host regular online webinars and workshops. Topics include the experience sharing from Chinese international student union organizers, reflections and discussions on campus safety with the organizers and participants of the rally after the shooting at the University of Chicago, how to have deep conversations on Chinese issues, how to practice a feminist self and community care and so on.

With the easing of the COVID-19 in the first half of the year, CSA has carried out more offline activities. We hosted in person workshops on different approaches to social change in Chicago and New York. At the end of July, under the collaborative efforts of CSA alumni, CSA held its first two-day in-person convening in New York: "Forging Our Paths(探索我们的路)". Within the two days, more than one hundred friends participated in workshops and seminars facilitated by social justice organizers and activists, exploring our transnational perspective and strength as Chinese students and activists, and together trying out action-oriented steps in the social justice movement.

Entering the second half of the year, in an environment where China, the United States, and other international social issues continued to politicize international students and activists, CSA also continues to serve as a platform for resources sharing, connecting and supporting those who want to participate in actions and organize their communities in different regions. Especially in recent moments of protest and uprising around the world, we have witnessed student participation in offline events on a large and wide scale. More and more international students and overseas youth want to break out of their comfort zone and participate in various public issue discussions. They also show strong interest and desire in learning more about participating in direct action and community organizing. But at the same time, we have also observed the common challenges and dilemmas faced by international students who are experiencing accelerated politicization: due to the perennial lack of opportunities and state repression, many international students who want to do something have little risk assessment and organizing experience. How to communicate and establish connections with people from different backgrounds within their local communities is also a very important topic.

2023 Planning

Based on these observations, CSA has adjusted its program planning for 2023 accordingly. Instead of a Spring Internship program, we will have monthly online webinars and workshops. The monthly events aim to connect and support international students and activist communities in different regions in a longer-term and continuous manner, and to address the challenges and difficulties encountered this year. For example, how to do safety assessments, how to find like-minded friends and develop local action-oriented communities, how to build a more sustainable activist and organizer ecosystem from reactionary actions, and how to continue and deepen our understanding and action of social issues. CSA will also continue to implement our fourth organizer fellowship in the summer (June to August).

More information about the programs and applications will be shared in the new year. The website design update of CSA will also be completed at the beginning of the year. Once it’s completed, everyone is welcome to browse and explore toolkits in our resource hub.

CSA wants to hold onto the bravery we witnessed this year with everyone and pass it on next year. In the new year, let us continue to support each other, explore and act.
